Mon Area Community Development Organization (MACDO) donated seedlings to Hangan village, Ye Township, which has been flooded annually during the rainy season.
The donation is to help improve environmental awareness.
“These villages are in low-lying areas and are flooded almost every year due to the rains. The purpose of the donation is to make the locals aware that the trees can help protect them from natural disasters, ” said Mi Phyu, leader of the MACDO.
The seedlings are teak, pyin ka toe, thingan and mahogany. About 600 saplings were distributed throughout Hangan village.
“In the past, we planted trees with the locals. The plan now is to provide four seedlings per house and they plant them where they want, ” she added.
Mon Area Community Development Organization (MACDO) also donated another 600 seedlings to MaKyi village on September 9.
“They are planted in yards and on the side of the road. Some were planted to provide shade for the road. Some plants can be used to make furniture. If there are more trees, the floods will decrease.” Said Khit thit, a member of the youth group.
According to the 2014 census, Hangan village has a population of over 9,000 and more than 1,500 households.
