30 women died in February — more than 100 since the coup began in 2021

The Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) reported that 30 women lost their lives nationwide between February 1st and the 28th, 2024.

Of the 30 deceased women, 9 fell victim to mortar shells fired by the military junta, 7 perished in airstrikes, 5 were fatally shot by the military junta, 5 lost their lives while in detention by the military junta, 3 were tortured to death during detention, and 1 was burned alive.

Sagaing Region recorded the highest number of women fatalities, with 15 reported deaths, followed by Bago Region, where 6 women lost their lives.

According to BWU, between February 1st, 2021, and February 28th, 2024, a total of 106 women have lost their lives in targeted attacks on civilians, including mortar shell strikes and airstrikes, during the military coup period.

In addition, 3,332 women have been detained and 781 have been convicted.

BWU explained this data was compiled based on information from the Association for the Assistance  for Political Prisoners (AAPP) and from reliable media sources on the ground.  The numbers may even be greater than reported.
