Since November 17th, the opinions of Mon monks and nationals on the potential union of the two Mon Parties have been collected. Mon nationals, especially Mon monks, gave great support, said the Chairman of AMDP Nai Ngwe Thein (aka) Nai Janu-Mon.

The Chairman continued, “70 monks from Lamine Sub-township had collectively written a letter requesting two parties to absolutely unite.  The period of collecting opinions by the Party Commission has been due today and I was reported that most (of opinions) supported the union of (two) parties.”

In the previous month, leaders from the two parties said that in order to reinforce the Mon parties whilst contesting the upcoming elections in 2012, and to ensure that Mon nationals have a single mind during voting, the two Mon parties have expressed their desire to unite.

A seven-member commission led by Minister of Mon Ethnic Issues (Karen State) Nai Chit Oo was formed by AMDP in order to collect opinions on November 27.

“How (the two parties) will be united would be decided in the Central Executive Committee Meeting of our party in the 18th of this month,” said Nai Ngwe Thein (aka) Nai Janu-Mon.

Meanwhile, Dr. Min Soe Linn, Dr. Min Kyi Win, Nai Soe Myint and Nai Pan-aung from MNDF and four members of the Opinion Collecting Commission of AMDP discussed the union of the (two) parties in Moulmein yesterday.

MNDF, whose legitimacy was denied in 1990, held a meeting in Moulmein in the previous month and re-elected the new executive committee members.  However, the re-registration of the party has not yet been decided.

MNDF Chairman Nai Ngwe Thein has said, “The policy is that (the party) must not contest the election if the 2008 constitution isn’t amended was decided by the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA).  However, in the previous month, we ethnic groups have already discussed with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.  Our party will make a decision at the meeting of this 22nd, the two Mon parties will be absolutely united.”
