-

IMNA – Fire has ripped through Zin-Gyeik village, Paung Township, in Mon State during the night (25th December). Around 100 homes are reported destroyed after the fire broke out around 11pm local time.

“It happened in the quarter (of town) near the railway, more than 100 houses were destroyed by the wire shock”, explained local resident Nai Phay Than.

Many residents have reported that the firer started from an electrical surge through overhead wires, others have blamed carelessness of a homeowner when cooking or using candles. (There has been no official confirmation as of the publishing of this article.)

Fire engines came from Paung and ThaTon Townships. However, a local resident (wishes to remain anonymous) said that they arrived shortly after the 100 homes were destroyed.

It is reported that the Minister of Mon State, Dr. Min New Soe, also rushed to Zin-Gyeik to assist locals and fire crews.

“It happened in a very short time because of the very strong winds that blow during this season” said Mon State Development Networking (MSDN) member Ko Min Min Nwe.

Zin-Gyike is located along the Yangon-Moulmein highway. Zin-Gyike is renowned for its waterfall that provides the rural community of Zin-Gyeik and also Paung Township electricity. The waterfall is also a popular spot for locals and tourist to travel.
