Mawlamyine Technological University Student Sentenced to Life in Prison

Aung Phone Kyaw, a fourth-year student at Mawlamyine Technological University in Mon State, was sentenced to life in prison by a military tribunal on February 15.

According to the State Administrative Council (SAC) Aung Phone Kyaw was arrested on November 17, 2021 in Thingangyun Township, Yangon.

“At that time, it was announced in Myawaddy that he was caught with weapons in Thingangyun. There were two people charged in this case. The second person from Yangon had also been sentenced to life in prison, “ said a source close to the case.

The military tribunal hearing determined the sentence under sections 50 (i) and 50 (a) of the Anti-Terrorism Law, according to the SAC statement.

Two other first-year students from the Technical University (Mawlamyine) had been previously charged under section 505 (a) and are serving a one year sentence.
