Two Women Injured as Mortar Shell Strikes Kawkareik Township

-

Two women sustained injuries, one of them an 85-year-old, from a mortar shell explosion in Ward No. 2 of Kawkareik Township, Karen State. This incident was reported to IMNA by local and social aid organizations.

Early in the morning of November 2, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) forces attacked the Kawkareik township based military junta’s 97th Infantry base.

During the fighting, a mortar shell struck the home of 85-year-old Daw Ngwe Than and her 40-year-old daughter, Daw Aye Ye, both from Ward No. 2 of Kawkareik Township.

“I heard the continuous sounds of mortar shells. One hit the house of grandmother Daw Ngwe Than. Both victims have been transported to Kawkareik Hospital,” stated an official from the social relief organization.

Local people were hiding inside their houses during the fighting, and only calmed down around 4:00 p.m.

Residents worry the fighting between the two sides will intensify.

On October 13th, a student was killed and 3 others were injured when a mortar shell exploded at the East Basic Education High School, also located in Ward No. 2, Kawkareik township.
