Myanmar Remains in World’s Worst Humanitarian Crisis

-

Myanmar remains in the midst of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis as it enters the second half of 2026, with international financial support increasingly needed, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Myanmar said on July 13.

UNOCHA Myanmar estimates that 3.8 million people remain displaced in Myanmar, most of whom have been displaced multiple times, as ongoing conflict continues to drive new waves of displacement.

Recent fighting and shelling in Magway Region alone forced more than 100,000 additional people from their homes.

According to the report, fuel rationing and unstable electricity supply are disrupting health facilities, water systems, and communication services in conflict-affected areas, driving up the cost of delivering humanitarian aid.

As of March, donor-funded humanitarian partners had reached 1.6 million people, including 832,000 in priority need, out of a targeted 4.9 million people requiring assistance.

However, ongoing armed conflict nationwide, movement restrictions, and administrative approval requirements and bureaucratic procedures continue to make it difficult for humanitarian aid to reach affected communities.

UNOCHA stressed the urgent need to ensure safe, sustained, and unimpeded humanitarian access to vulnerable people facing these risks.

The report also noted that only 43% of the funding required for Myanmar’s humanitarian response has been secured so far, underscoring the continued need for donor support.
