According to local residents, the military junta is firing mortar shells on the surrounding villages, including Khaywea village, Kyaikto township, Mon state, and the residents are worried for their lives and livelihood.
The 310th military junta’s artillery based in Theinzayat township and the military junta battalion based in Bago, Waw township, and Letpan village are firing mortar shells into Kyaikto every day.
Residents say that it is difficult to go to the orchard and workplaces to feed their families because the military junta battalions are firing at least 5 to 10 mortar shells per day.
“Mortar shells are fired every day. We can’t do anything anymore. When we hear the sound, we rush to the bunker. Almost everyone here has dug bomb shelters. Prices are rising, and we’re struggling to make a living,” said a Khaywea resident.
On October 11, around 7:00 a.m., a motorcycle was damaged and two cows were injured when a mortar shell exploded near the home of U Pho Thar Wa in Chaungwa village, Kyaikto township.
Military junta battalions have been firing mortar shells daily, mainly targeting Kyaikto township, Chaungwa, Khaywea, Kanyinaie and Kyaukponkyikwin village.
As the military junta continues to fire mortar shells, residents who have the means have moved to Theinzayat and Kyaikto townships.
“Mortar shells are fired every day. We are living with the same fear. Those who have money have moved to Theinzayat side,” said a Chaungwa resident.
Last September, the military junta’s artillery fired mortar shells into Kyaikto township, forcing more than 2,000 residents to flee.
During the military coup in Kyaikto Township, residents suffered from mortar shells fired by the military junta, landmines, and many were killed or injured, according to local residents.
