In Thaton Township, Kyar Pan Village checkpoint comes under  fire and grenada attack

According to local residents, an unknown armed group opened fire on the  Kyar Pan Village Checkpoint, Thaton Township at around 7:00 PM on September 5th.

Security forces responded which led to an exchange of gunfire.

A local resident told the Mon News Agency that after an unknown armed group opened fire on the Kyar Pan checkpoint that included throwing three 40-mm grenades, security forces responded with small arms gunfire.

“They first used 40-mm grenades followed  immediately by small weapons gunfire. When the security forces fired back, there was an exchange of fire. There were another 3-4 shots of heavy weapons and the sound of small arms firing for almost 20 minutes. I don’t know which group it was,” he said.

According to a person close to the Thaton police an investigation is ongoing. It is unclear if any security personnel were injured.  The checkpoint itself and some nearby buildings were damaged.

Military security cooperation teams are conducting a search and inspection in the upper neighborhood of Thaton Township and along the highway early this morning, according to some local residents.

State Administrative Council subordinate departmental offices, and district village Administration offices, as well as security forces’ checkpoints are often attacked in Thaton Township.
