NLD MP, Daw Nwe Nwe Aung’s application for Health Insurance Rejected

Mawlamyine’s National League for Democracy and Member of the State Hluttaw (parliament), Daw Nwe Nwe Aung’s health insurance application was rejected on March 29th by the Mawlamyine Township Court.

Daw Nwe Nwe Aung, is currently being held in Kyaikmaraw Central Prison.

She had applied for health insurance through her lawyer, at a recent ‌court appointment due to a heart disease medical condition.

In 2018, the NLD government committed to achieving universal health coverage through a single payer system (health insurance)  for the country’s population by 2030. The goal was to assure access to essential health care without financial barriers for the population.

Myanmar’s public healthcare system accounted for around 80% of all hospitals and clinics and provided heavily subsidised care to the country’s 54 million people. Shortly after the military coup, this all virtually vanished overnight – and in the midst of a global pandemic,

The NLD MP who has been diagnosed with heart disease, was arrested on allegations of of collaborating with a terrorist organization and providing financial support. She was charged under Section 52 (a) of the Anti-Terrorism Law.

Daw Nwe Nwe Aung, is a Member of the State Hluttaw, representing Constituency No. 2, for the National League for Democracy ( NLD ), Mawlamyine Township. She is also the NLD party Chair.
