Mon historian, Nai Maung Toe dies at age 77

Nai Maung Toe, a well known Mon historian and literature scholar, and retired director of the Department of National Archive, passed away in the morning of Saturday July 17, at the age of 77.  He died at his house, in Tawe Township, Yangon Region. 

“He was feeling ill since the first of July. He passed away at 6.40 am this morning. He likely was infected with COVID-19, but he also had underlying health problems” said Mi Kon Chan, his daughter. 

The remains of Nai Maung Toe will be cremated on Saturday. 

“We are devastated to lose a Mon scholar. He did a lot of things in support of Mon affairs. In 1972, he was first the Secretary of the Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon). Then, he served as  Chair and then Speaker. He was also the Chair of the Mon National Day [Organizing] Committee (Yangon). He was also involved in many activities in support of the  Mon people throughout the State,” said Nai Soe Kyi, Speaker of the Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon).

Nai Maung Toe was the Chief Editor of the monthly Amardein Mon Journal, and he translated and published the Mon King Rajadirat, also known as the King of the Kings. He also published collections of featured articles. 

Nai Maung Toe is survived by his wife Mi Aye Than, dauther Mi Kon Chan and son Min Kaung San who reside in Tawe Township, Yangon Region.

Nai Maung Toe was the fifth son, and his parents were Nai Shar and Mi Sein Jow, came from Kawkhamal Village, Hpar-Auk Village Tract, Mawlamyine Township, Mon State.
