Mon State Chief Minister leads delegation to NMSP-controlled areas: Issues citizenship cards

Mon State Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan led a delegation of Ministers and departmental officials to visit Wei Paung village in the New Mon State Party (NMSP) controlled area of Ye Chaung Phya on December 24, 2020.  The delegation distributed citizenship cards to local ethnic groups.

Nai Kyaw Ye, General Secretary of the NMSP, and Nai Byar Le, in-charge of the Central Executive Committee, Chairman of Dawei District, Secretary and Education, Health attended the citizenship card ceremony.

In total 2,024 cards were  issued to people in the Weizin area of Ye Chaung Phya and 1,758 household registrations were conducted. The State Minister handed over 200 bags of rice, 1,000 peitthas of oil and COVID-19 defense equipment to the NMSP General Secretary.

The delegation also extended support to NMSP officials in Dawei District.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving the National Reconciliation and Peace Center (NRPC), the Mon State Government’s Ministry of Immigration and Human Resources, and the Ye Township Immigration Office. 

There are 35 villages in this area controlled by the NMSP.  Census data from 2014-18 indicated the population in Ye Chaung Phya was nearly 30,000, with more than 6,000 households.

The NMSP first signed a ceasefire agreement with the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC)  in 1995, and in 2012 under the government of President Thein Sein, a state / union-level bilateral ceasefire agreement was signed. 

Under the NLD government in 2018, the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) was signed.
