NMSP calls on Union government to announce nationwide ceasefire

Min Thu Ta and Mi Khatta Nan – Today, in their first political dialogue since a ceasefire agreement was signed 45 days ago, New Mon State Party (NMSP) delegates demanded that the Union government announce a nationwide ceasefire.

The NMSP delegation spokesperson, Nai Tala Nyi, said, “In this round of dialogue, the NMSP primarily asked the government to call a nationwide ceasefire, including Kachin State, and to officially announce it.”

He continued that during the meeting, the NMSP addressed roughly five issues covering nationwide ceasefire, a sustainable ceasefire agreement, further union-level dialogue, the release of two Mon political prisoners (Nai Myo Thawe and Nai Yetka), and other general topics surrounding area development, social development, education, health, and business.

U Aung Min, head of the government delegation, promised to deliver NMSP’s messages regarding nationwide ceasefire and the release of Mon political prisoners directly to the president, stated Nai Tala Nyi.

U Aung Min was joined in the government delegation by U Khin Ye from the Department of Immigration and Population, U Ohn Myint, the Chief Minister of Mon State, Maj. Gen. Tin Maung Win, the Chief Commander of Southeast Command, and Brigadier Zaw Naing Oo from the Defense Ministry Military Office. The NMSP delegation was led by Joint General Secretary Nai Aung Mon and EC member Nai Tala Nyi, along with Nai Lyi Gagao, Nai Aye Mon, Nai Na Duu Raman, Nai Banya Leal, Nai M Seik Chan, Mi Sar Dar, and Nai Kyi San. Four peace mediators were also present at the meeting.

The NMSP signed a ceasefire agreement with the Union government on February 25, stipulating that the government must initiate political dialogue within 45 days of the ceasefire. In addition to this meeting, the NMSP is pushing for a political dialogue to be held between all ceasefire groups in December of this year.
