Myanmar TV 4 announces 2010 Burmese election date

-

The announcement published in the government-owned New Light of Myanmar news source

IMNA : Today, August 13th, at 10:00 am Burma time, the government-run television station Myanmar TV 4 (MRTV4) announced that the 2010 Burmese elections will be held on November 7th.

A Rangoon-based journalist reported to IMNA that the announcement was broadcasted on the station’s daily 10 am news segment. She reported that the announcement was only made on MRTV4, and only in the Burmese language.

The announcement flouts previously published expectations  that the elections will take place on October 10th of this year. On June 10th 2010, the Democratic Voice of Burma published a statement made by US senator Jim Webb that the elections would be held on “10-10 10”, in keeping with what the news network called the Burmese government’s “fixation on numerology”.

U Ohn Lwin, a leader from the Rangoon-based party known as the National Political Alliance told IMNA that he and his fellow election participants welcomed the election proclamation, citing the announcement of the election’s date as the commencement of Burma’s movement towards democracy.

“As people who want change from military rule, we are ready any time [for the elections]. This is the first step forward towards change. Whether we win or not does not matter, what matter is finishing military’s era of rule. I am sure we can do better in the next term of elections,” he said.
