As of June 29, 2021, Thanbyuzayat Township, in Myanmar’s Mon State, has recorded 165 cases of COVID-19, and 2 deaths.

“Our Thanbyuzayat is facing its worst moment. In some cases, when one family member is found positive, the whole family is checked and the result shows the entire family is positive. It is necessary to restrict their movements and impose containment measures”, said Ko Bo San, a Thanbyuzayat resident.
Due to the spike in COVID-19 cases, restaurants, tea shops, beer and alcohol shops have been instructed not to permit in-store service. Instead, they are encouraged to provide take-away service.
Despite the high number of COVID-19 cases, local people are still going out, and some people do not wear masks.
“I would like us to return to the time when people who did not wear masks faced fines and there were checkpoints. It’d be also good to impose fines on those who are opening their shops without public health measures in place. I think people here will only take action if there is a consequence with the law. If not imposed, people here will neglect the rules and then the entire town will face COVID-19,” said Ma Nwe Nwe Htet, a Thanbyuzayat Town resident.
Ma Nwe Nwe Htet added that it’s necessary for the people not to gather, but to wear masks and the public should cooperate to prevent community transmission of the virus to their own families.
Mon State’s Public Health Ministry has had a lock-down in effect from June 24th. It extends from (House) No. Ma-19 to Ma-50, in the middle block of Aung Mingalar Ward (3) of Thanbyuzayat, since June 24.
According to a June 29th statement from the Ministry of Health, Mon State has 55 new cases — of which Thanbyuzayat Township has 20 cases, Mawlamyine has 15 cases, Belin has 8 cases, and Paung has 4 cases. Thaton, Kyaikhto, Ye, and Kyaikmaraw each have 2 cases.
As of June 29 there were 1,312 cases confirmed that have been documented as part of the third wave of COVID-19 across the country.
