Two women were seriously injured after stepping on a landmine in Nyaung Kone village, Hpa-an Township, Karen State, residents said.
Daw Naw Hla Kuu, 36, and Daw Naw Ta Duu, 45, both residents of Nyaung Kone village, were foraging for bamboo shoots in the forest near the village when the landmine exploded around 10 a.m. on July 18.
Both women suffered serious injuries to their legs and arms in the blast, a local resident said.
“Both of them have serious injuries. They’ve been sent to Hpa-an People’s Hospital,” the resident said.
Nyaung Kone village lies along the Wapoedaw-Kamamaung road in Hpa-an Township and has about 900 households, residents said.
Military junta troops are active in and around Nyaung Kone village, as are the Border Guard Force (BGF), the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), and joint revolutionary forces.
It has not yet been confirmed which group planted the landmine that injured the two women.
Landmine incidents have occurred frequently in Karen State since the military coup, with some resulting in deaths.
