A fire relief committee in Kayokepi village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, is arranging to rebuild homes for residents affected by a recent fire before the rainy season begins, according to local sources.

The fire broke out on April 28 in the Annawa Ward area on the western side of Kayokepi village after a candle inside a house reportedly caused the blaze. Around 38 people from nine households were affected by the fire.

Fire victims are currently being sheltered at the Shin Upagutta Dhamma Hall relief camp in Kayokepi village and at the homes of relatives and acquaintances. Donors are also providing food and essential items to those affected.

“At the moment, donors are coming every day to provide assistance. They are donating rice, cooking oil, food, and clothes. Monasteries, donors from abroad, other organizations, and local residents are all helping. Most of the fire victims are currently staying with relatives rather than at the Dhamma Hall,” a member of the Kayokepi village fire relief committee told IMNA.

The committee member added that further assistance is still needed to rebuild homes for fire victims before the rainy season arrives.

The Kayokepi village tract fire relief committee is collecting donations, which will be used as funds to rebuild the destroyed houses.

“We are planning to complete the house construction before the rainy season. We estimate around 3 million kyat for each house. More donations are still needed. We are also collecting construction materials such as timber and bamboo, and construction work will begin soon,” a volunteer assisting with the effort said.

Local residents are collecting thatch, timber, bamboo, and other building materials to construct stronger replacement homes for affected families.

On May 1, the Thanbyuzayat Township People’s Parliament representative and local officials visited the fire-affected area to meet with victims and observe the damage.

Residents and local organizations have also encouraged people to donate money or construction materials through the Kayokepi village administration office and the Kayokepi village social assistance group to support rebuilding efforts for fire victims.
