Mawlamyine University Students’ Union Urges Public Not to Place Hopes on Junta’s Election

-

The Mawlamyine University Students’ Union has urged the public not to place any hopes on the military junta’s planned election, warning that it will not bring about genuine federal democracy but instead strengthen the junta’s grip on power.

Speaking on behalf of the union, president Min Than Sin Oo said the junta is attempting to use the election to legitimize its unlawful seizure of power while people continue to suffer under military and political oppression.

“At a time when military and political struggles are intensifying, they are only trying to find an escape route. The junta is trying to revive its illegal seizure of power and turn it into something ‘legal.’ By doing so, they are essentially granting themselves a license to oppress the people, to exploit them, and to continue ruling without accountability,” he said.

The Students’ Union also warned that the junta’s election would further erode the rule of law, worsen people’s hardships, and threaten security and freedoms.

After the junta’s election commission announced the national vote will be held on December 28th, 2025,  political parties in Mon State have begun opening township offices and mobilizing supporters in preparation.

However, Min Than Sin Oo declared that any individuals or political parties participating in the junta’s election would be regarded as “enemies of the people and enemies of the revolution.”

“We can’t simply tell them not to run, they have their political dignity and ambitions. But they must understand that betraying the people for political gain is unacceptable. That’s why, as we’ve announced, if they take part, we will treat those political parties as enemies of the people and of the revolution,” he said.

Currently, revolutionary forces in Mon and Tanintharyi regions are mounting military pressure to resist the junta’s election plans. Like other revolutionary groups, the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union has pledged to oppose the junta’s election.

Earlier, on September 4th, the New Mon State Party (Anti-Military Dictatorship) / Ramonnya Mon Army (NMSP/AD) issued a statement rejecting the junta’s “sham election.” Similarly, the Mon State Revolutionary Force (MSRF), Ye People’s Defense Force (YPDF), and PDF Dawna Column (2) released a joint warning on July 21st, 2025, urging the public and local authorities not to cooperate with the junta’s election process.
