Airstrike in Nawnghkio Kills Nine, Including Monks; 17 Others Injured

-

The military junta launched an airstrike on Sein Yadanar Adequacy Monastic School in Nawnghkio, northern Shan State, on the evening of March 16, killing nine people, including monks, and injuring 17 others, according to a statement from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).

At approximately 5:30 PM yesterday, a military jet dropped four 250-pound bombs on Sein Yadanar Adequacy Monastery and continued the attack with firearms.

According to the TNLA, those killed in the airstrike included two monks, four novice monks, one man, and two women. Seventeen others sustained injuries, with some elderly individuals reported to be in critical condition.

“Yesterday’s airstrike targeted a religious site. There have also been bombings on hospitals and schools. The attack killed nine people and injured 17 others. We are continuing to provide medical treatment to those wounded,” TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo told the Independent Mon News Agency.

The TNLA stated that it had taken control of Nawnghkio without encountering resistance, yet the military junta proceeded with airstrikes on the town. The group has urged residents to remain vigilant and take precautions against further attacks.

Military analysts believe the junta is intensifying operations in Nawnghkio Township and the Taungkham area, suggesting ongoing efforts to regain control of Nawnghkio.
