Heavy clashes have erupted between Military Junta forces and the Karenni Joint Resistance Forces in the southern Shan State townships of Pinlaung and Pekon, located near the Shan-Kayah border.
Fighting reportedly began on October 31 when Military Junta troops launched an offensive in the Pinlaung Township villages of Namhparamu, Banmak, Hwo, and Lwegyine. The resistance forces engaged in direct combat to counter the advancing junta troops.
A member of the local People’s Defense Force based in Pekon said, “We intercepted the junta’s advance towards Karenni territory, which triggered the fighting. The Junta troops are supported by PNO (Pa-O National Organization) forces and continue to use drones to push forward despite ground resistance.”
The intense clashes have resulted in casualties, including local residents who were hit by gunfire, according to rescue social workers. Thousands of locals have fled to safer areas to escape the violence.
“Most people have run towards nearby towns, while others have fled to wherever they can find shelter,” said a rescue worker. “The Junta is shelling indiscriminately, making it impossible for villagers to stay in the fields. Homes are being burned, and some were killed by mortar shell strikes.”
According to local defense groups, at least five residents, including a child under 10, have lost their lives in the fighting.
The Military Junta continues its push to gain control of Kayah State, causing an escalation in the region’s already intense conflict.
