Residents in Fear as Junta Fires Mortar Shells in Thanpyuzayat Township

-

In Mon state, Thanpyuzayat township, Weakali village, junta forces are firing mortar shells, causing great concern amongst the residents.

On December 5th, the joint revolutionary forces used a drone to bomb the junta checkpoint on the Ye-Thanpyuzayat highway.  The military responded by firing mortar shells at nearby villages. One exploded in Sakhangyi village, causing damage to a house.

“East of Thetkaw village, downhill, lies the Weakali artillery. The military junta’s artillery issued evacuation notices to people near Thetkaw village. Some residents fled, causing concern among the locals. Even farmers are reluctant to work,” said a resident of Weawinkayar village.

A resident of Thanpyuzayat mentioned that after the shooting, farmers in the vicinity of Thetkaw village are apprehensive about their safety.

“If the shooting stops, I will go back to work. I still need to make a living. When the shooting started, the farm workers were too afraid to go out,” he said.

Since the attacks by revolutionary forces in Chaunghnitkhwa village,  the military junta’s camps and checkpoints in Thanpyuzayat, Ye, Mudon, Mawlamyine, and Thaton districts are experiencing ongoing attacks.
