23 civilians killed in one month in Tanintharyi Region

According to the FE5 Tanintharyi Research Group, 23 civilians were killed in Tanintharyi Region just in the month of June.

Among the 23 dead, approximately 10 civilians were killed as a result of the military junta intentionally shooting their weapons including and motor shells at civilian populations.   There were also cases of deaths due to torture during interrogation.

6 deaths occurred due to armed fighting with the People’s Defense Forces, 5  deaths were related to individuals who did not stop at military checkpoints, and 7 people who were killed in circumstances where the perpetrators could not be determined.

In June, the military junta arrested at least 170 civilians under various charges, 2 were killed and 110 were released. Those not released continue to face investigation and prosecution with capital punishment as a possible outcome. 

The dead civilians include 8 from Pulaw Township, 3 from Kaw Taung, Launglon, Thayetchaung Townships, 2 from Myaik and Tanintharyi Townships, and 1 from other townships.

In the Tanintharyi Region, the fighting has become more intense month by month. In June, there were 41 clashes between the People’s Defense Forces and the military junta.  The military junta’s Pu Saw Hti camp, the police station, and checkpoint, were attacked 20 times.

The military junta has launched more attacks using motor shells, fired by air and sea. Mortar shells have fallen in villages, resulting in more deaths and damage, and forcing more internally displaced people to flee their homes.  

In June, the surrounding villages including Yange and Kanetthiri in Thare Chaung Township were attacked by the military junta with naval, land and motor shells, forcing thousands of local residents to flee.

The total number of refugees in Tanintharyi has reached more than 35,000, and the need for food and medicine is high.

According to information released by the FE5 Tanintharyi group, due to the high price of goods, the groups providing aid to the refugees are also facing financial difficulties.
