Heavy weapons fire kills and injures Kanni residents

On May 30, near Kanni Village, Kyondoe Township, Kawkareik Township, Karen State, a resident of Thayettaw Village was killed by a heavy weapons fire, reported local residents.

At around 10:00 a.m. on May 30, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Forces (PDF) attacked the Military Council camp in Kyondoe with a drone. The State Administrative Council’s Military Council returned fire with heavy weapons.

A shell fired by the SAC military council exploded near the village of Kanni, killing Nai Pu from Thayettaw village who was riding a tricycle.

“The PDFs approached Kyondoe town and then dropped a drone on the SAC Military Council camp. The SAC Military Council fired back with a heavy weapon. It fell near Kanni. The shell hit his head and he died.” said a resident.

The use of heavy weapons in the area has been on-going.

On May 28, the 546th Infantry Regiment based in Kyondoe fired 120 mm and 105 mm heavy weapons into Kawka village, according to the KNU Dupla District. 15-year-old Saw Htin Linn Aung, 21-year-old Naw Aye Marn Htet, and 57-year-old Daw Thein Shwe from Kawka village were injured.

In addition, one house was destroyed by fire, and 6 houses sustained damage.

In May, 6 local residents were injured and at least 10 houses were damaged in Kawka village due to heavy weapons fire.
