The Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) has added security personnel to Mon National Schools in order for them to operate safely.
School committee members and parents have collaborated to discuss how to provide a safe learning environment in light of the political situation in the country.
Since the first day that state schools opened on June 1, there have been numerous incidents of gun fire and bomb blasts that have parents worried about the safety of their children attending school.
“We are still a bit concerned. Although there is now security being provided at the schools, I am always on alarm,” said a parent, whose son is studying at a Mon National School.
Other community members have a different perspective. One parent said, “I assume that we do not have to worry much because our schools are not under the administration of the [current] government.”
About 134 Mon schools, including 3 schools that operate in collaboration with state schools, have over 800 teachers. The schools are in Mon and Karen states as well as the Tanintharyi region and operate under the control of the New Mon State Party.
Some groups in opposition to the State Administration Council (SAC) have urged the students not to go to the state schools. There have been threats posted on social media sites indicating these schools will be bombed.
