SAC’s UEC requests all political parties turn over membership lists

-

The State Administration Council (SAC)’s Union Election Commission (UEC have requested political parties turn over their list of party members.

On June 10, the UEC notified the parties their membership lists must be submitted by  30/9/2021.  The notification details the manner in which this data is to be turned over.

Hard copy membership lists must be imputed into an Excel File and burned onto a CD, which then must be submitted to the UEC. Further political parties are to indicate where their membership numbers are strong i.e. 10,000 but must also indicate where membership is lower i.e. 1000 members.

The UEC claims that because political party membership has decreased, an inspection is warranted.

According to Nai San Tin, Joint-Secretary (2) of the Mon Unity Party (MUP), the party has already submitted information regarding membership numbers including updates that reflect recently resigned members.

“The list is the same as the last one. We already re-submitted the numbers that resigned. So, we already submitted it and there is no need to submit again. We submitted a number of 1,200 members. Now, the vacant number is not even close to 100.” said Nai San Tin.

The UEC has clarified that although the political parties may have previously submitted their member numbers in accordance with regulations,  the UEC still wants parties to provide two copies of the updated information using a specific form.

Nai San Tin, said, “When we report back, we will use the number that we submitted for the first time. They already have the member lists.”

According to UEC data, there are 93 political parties registered.
