Mon State’s Rescue Association is urging the public to make preparations in order not to suffer losses.  This includes having food supplies, medical aid and where possible to secure rescue boats for emergency situations.

“We have heard of the warnings about the rain and flooding. Flooding has already started in some of the usual places. It has not yet become an emergency stage situation. So, everyone should gather their important belongings from their houses and they should move and stay at their relatives or friends’ houses located on higher ground. They should also get the contact/phone number of the rescue groups,” said a rescue group member in Mawlamyine.

People in Paung and Chaungzone Townships, in particular, should be cautious as landslides and soil collapses have taken place. In addition, everyone should be careful about the dangers of thunderstorms and vehicular accidents.

“In 2019, Mon State faced a great loss. Now, the public is becoming aware and is being  cautious. Locals have cleaned the drains and streams and they have even prepared some boats for the volunteers to use when help is needed,” said a local ward administration head in Thanbyuzayat Township.

In 2020, Mon State experienced 69 natural disaster incidents. These events left 20 people dead, and 66 people injured.  Approximately 207.93 million Kyat in damages were also recorded, according to the Mon State Fire Fighting Department.
