The military junta has approved all entertainment events planned during the upcoming Thingyan festival in Mon State and is encouraging large-scale celebrations, according to sources close to local administrative bodies.
Residents who wish to organize entertainment activities for Thingyan and other social events must seek approval through village and ward administrators, who then submit requests to township authorities or the Southeast Regional Military Command in Mawlamyine.
Officials from the Southeast Regional Military Command have reportedly instructed organizers not to hold small-scale events but to carry out large and lively celebrations. They also said security personnel could be provided if needed, according to a source close to the administration.

“Just last week, we informed officials from the Southeast Command that we planned to hold a small music event. They told us to organize it on a larger scale and said we could even run it all night if we wanted,” the source said.
For this year’s Thingyan festival in Mawlamyine, the newly formed Mon State government is preparing to host large pavilions along Strand Road and Mawrawaddy Park Road. The celebrations are expected to include traditional Mon food and performances by well-known singers.
At the same time, reports indicate that government staff are being pressured to participate in the urban Thingyan events, while business owners are also being forced to contribute financially.
With relatively fewer clashes compared to other regions, Mon State has become a favorable area for the military junta to promote its narratives. Gambling operations have also emerged as a significant source of revenue.
However, due to ongoing armed conflict, deaths and injuries continue to occur daily. A member of a social rescue team in Ye Township urged the public to avoid crowded areas whenever possible and remain alert during the festival period.
“At a time like this, holding festivals brings more concern than joy. Even if there is security, what will happen if artillery shells land or fighting breaks out? People should stay cautious and be aware of their safety,” he said.
The military junta continues to carry out attacks not only through ground operations but also through airstrikes targeting schools, monasteries, and civilian homes.
During the 2025 Thingyan period, villages along the Mon–Karen border were shelled, resulting in the deaths of two women, including a child, and causing injuries.
