The Union Election Commission (UEC) under the junta has announced that nearly 5,000 candidates from political parties and independents have registered to contest in the upcoming election organized by the junta.
According to the UEC’s September 23 statement, candidate registration was open for 15 days, from September 8 to 22.
A total of 4,963 candidates were submitted nationwide: six political parties contesting across the country, 51 parties contesting only within one state or region, and several independents.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) registered the highest number of candidates with 1,018, followed by the National Unity Party (NUP) with 694, the People’s Pioneer Party (PPP) with 672, the Myanmar Farmers Development Party with 428, the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (White Tiger Party) with 584, and the People’s Party with 512. Another 960 candidates came from the 51 state/region-based parties, while 95 were independents.
The UEC said the submitted candidate lists will be scrutinized by local election sub-commissions until October 4.
The military junta has already announced that the first phase of the election will be held on December 28, 2025.
