Mon Unity Party to Delay Election Preparations Until Official Laws Are Released

-

According to Nai San Tin, the party’s general secretary, the Mon Unity Party (MUP) will only begin preparing for the upcoming election once the relevant election laws and regulations are officially released.

In June, the MUP held internal meetings at the township level, inviting local party representatives to discuss the current political climate and consult on the possibility of participating in the upcoming election, which now seems increasingly unavoidable.

“How we participate in the upcoming election will depend on the election laws and regulations, which are expected to be released after July. Only after seeing how constituencies and the electoral system are defined can we proceed with the necessary preparation. Regardless of our stance, avoiding the election entirely is not an option. Once the laws are released, we’ll decide—through party meetings—how to participate,” said Nai San Tin.

While the MUP has not yet begun formal campaign preparations, other political parties planning to contest in Mon State have already started preparing. However, widespread on-the-ground mobilization efforts are not yet visible.

Nai San Tin added, “We already have party offices in both urban and rural areas. Right now, we haven’t gone out into the villages. Instead, we invite our local party representatives to township-level meetings. We haven’t carried out any field-level mobilization campaigns yet.”

He also confirmed that the party has not yet selected or shortlisted any candidates for the upcoming election.

According to Nai San Tin, preparations are expected to begin in earnest toward the end of July.

Meanwhile, some nationwide political parties—including the People’s Party and the Shan and Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP or Kyat Phyu Party)—have started opening party offices in various Mon State townships.

The military junta has announced that the general election will be held either in December 2025 or January 2026.
