Man Shot Dead at Tea Shop in Kyaikto Township

-

A 51-year-old man from Kyaikpi village in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, was fatally shot while sitting at a tea shop, according to local sources.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on January 12 at the Parrot Tea Shop, located on General Aung San Road in Gangaw Ward, Kyaikto town. The victim, U San Min Aye, was reportedly approached by an unidentified gunman who arrived on a motorcycle, entered the tea shop, and fired three shots with a pistol before fleeing toward Hpetkaleik village.

“An unknown gunman came into the tea shop and shot U San Min Aye three times with a pistol. After the shooting, he rode away on his motorcycle heading toward Hpetkaleik village,” a local resident said.

U San Min Aye sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen, below his left ear, and under his chin, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was known to be involved in the buying and transportation of unlicensed vehicles. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Neither the military junta nor local revolutionary forces have issued any statements regarding the shooting.

Mon State has seen a rise in targeted killings by unidentified gunmen. In 2024 alone, at least 63 people were killed and over 10 injured in similar attacks, highlighting the growing insecurity in the region.
