The military junta has arrested and initiated legal proceedings, against a man from Mawlamyine township, for criticizing the regime on TikTok.
On November 4, the 29-year-old owner of a TikTok account named Ko Ko Htut was arrested by the military junta. This arrest came after he filmed a video of the security barriers at the minister’s residence in Mawlamyine township and spread false criticism on TikTok.
A person close to the family said, “That man was arrested by the military junta in civilian clothes at a newly opened 1990 tea shop in Myine Thar Yar. We now know that he has been charged.”
Ko Ko Htut has been charged under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and is being held at Zeyathiri Police Station.
The November 6 issue of the military junta’s newspaper Kyemon, stated that Ko Ko Htut was arrested for spreading social media propaganda aimed at disrupting national peace.
On November 2nd of last year, a midwife from Mawlamyine township who allegedly has ties to the civil disobedience movement was also charged by the military junta. She was charged for re-sharing messages that allegedly promoted violence on a social media site.
On November 5th, the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported that 797 civilians have been arrested in Mon State since the military coup.
