Mon Unity Party Yet to Officially Confirm Election Participation, but Internal Discussions Underway

-

The Mon Unity Party (MUP) has not yet issued an official statement confirming its participation in the election planned by the military junta before the end of 2025. However, sources from the party’s Executive Committee indicate that discussions related to the upcoming election are taking place.

Although the military junta is preparing to hold elections in December 2025, the MUP has not released any official announcements on its position. A member of the Executive Committee said that elections are a lifeline for political parties.

“Whether we like it or not, the junta is going to hold an election before the end of this year, by whatever means they choose. As a political party, we must engage with the process. For the Mon Unity Party to remain active, we will have to navigate this election, regardless of how flawed it may be. This has also been discussed within the Central Committee,” the source said.

Military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has repeatedly stated via junta-controlled media that elections will be held. Preparations are also being observed on the ground.

In response to the junta’s preparations, the MUP has reportedly held internal meetings and conducted low-profile organizational activities. Although no formal campaign has been launched, subtle preparations are underway.

Similarly, the Mon Development Party, representing the MUP in Karen State, is planning to open party offices in Hpa-An, Kawkareik, Kyainseikgyi, and Hlaingbwe Townships. However, due to ongoing conflict and clashes in the region, further preparations remain difficult, according to senior party officials.

A political analyst commenting on the situation said, “If the election does take place and the MUP decides to participate, then it’s important that there is mutual understanding and coordination between those inside and outside the revolutionary movement. If everyone acts independently without negotiation, further conflict could arise.”

The MUP was officially re-registered on September 9, 2024, in accordance with Article 9 of the junta’s Political Parties Registration Law.

Meanwhile, revolutionary forces have repeatedly warned political parties, including the MUP, not to support or legitimize the junta-organized election process.
