Since Military Coup, 5 Militia Leaders Killed, 3 Injured in Paung Township

-

Five militia leaders associated with the military junta were killed, and three were wounded by gunfire in Paung Township, Mon State, according to sources within the military junta community.

Militia leaders who have been shot since February 1, 2021, the date of the military coup, include U Yi Myint from Yinnyein village, U Myint Yi (aka Pawpi), U Kyaw Soe Moe from Hpalat village, Ko Bo Bo Aung from Moenaing ward, and U Htet Naing from Kywechan village.

“After the coup, militia leaders were provided with guns by the military junta.  Some of them were shot while sitting in a tea shop, while others were attacked in their homes or killed while riding motorcycles on the road. In total, five people have died, and three injured,” said a source close to the military junta.

The military junta has distributed firearms to military veterans and pro-military militia members in every neighborhood and village in Paung Township, instructing them to carry out nightly security duties.

The People’s Defense Forces (PDF) announced that militia leaders had arrested, tortured, and extorted money from civil servants and youth participating in the non-violent civil disobedience movement (CDM) and they were colluding with the military junta and engaging in gambling activities.

The People’s Defense Forces frequently shoot and kill military junta troops, police, department staff, district administrators, militia members, and informants in Paung Township, Mon State.
