Residents escaping the conflict between the military junta and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) in Kyaikmarraw Township, Mon State, are in urgent need of food and medical aid.
Aid workers report that both the military junta and the revolutionary forces have blocked access to roads, causing delays in the provision of assistance to residents escaping the conflict.
One resident of Kawtpanaw said the refugees are not consolidated in one location, resulting in challenges in meeting their food and other essential needs.
“As this battle could extend over several days, we’ve gathered as much food as possible. Although we have food, the challenge lies in distribution, given the presence of the military junta in Pyartaung. We’re eager to send aid, but unfortunately, we’re unable to do so,” he explained.
Those fleeing the war sought refuge with nearby relatives and friends in Mudon, Mawlamyine, and Kyaikmarraw townships, while others were hiding in the jungles or caves.
One Kawtpanaw resident indicated that approximately 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently seeking shelter in the Pyartaung Cave, and an additional 100 IDPs are near the MCL cement factory. All are in urgent need of assistance.
As a consequence of the conflict, at least five civilians, including two children, were killed, and ten others were injured. Additionally, There has been extensive damage to homes from mortar shells.
