Number of Internally Displaced Persons on the rise in Tanintharyi Region

In some townships in Tanintharyi Region, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has significantly increased, according to a November 20th statement issued by the Dawna Tanintharyi – Displaced Persons Assistance Group’s.

In Yepyu and Thayetchaung Townships, the number of IDPs increased from around 13,000 in September to around 25,000 in October.

The return of military junta forces to the area last October has led to the increasing numbers.

According to the statement, the number of people fleeing the war in Ye Pyu township increased from about 5,000 last September to about 15,000 in October, and the number of people fleeing the war in Thayetchaung township increased from about 8,000 to about 10,000.

However, in Tanintharyi Region, Dawei Region, the number of displaced people decreased from over 2,000 to only 1,000. In Pulaw township, the number of displaced people decreased from nearly 20,000 to 10,000.

The Dawna Tanintharyi Displaced Persons Assistance Group stated that the numbers are gathered from persons on the ground, and may be low as some IDPs can’t be reached due to local conditions.
