One woman was killed and four others, including a female child, were injured following the explosion of motor shells ammunition that targeted Ywalaykwatthit Ward No. 1, Thainzayat Town, Kyaik Hto Township, Mon State.
On June 16, around 8:00 p.m 3 motor shells exploded in the Ywalaykwatthit area of Theinzayat Town, Ward No. 1. Daw Aye Aye Nwe, a 38-year-old resident of the Ywalaykwatthit was killed. 5-year-old Ma Thazin Aung, U Zin Bo Latt, U Shain Kyaw, and Daw Cho Mar Than sustained injuries from the attack.
“Three motor shells fell into the village. One house fell and people inside were affected,” said Kyaik Hto, a local resident.
Those injured were taken to the Theinzayt district hospital by the social rescue team for medical treatment.
This was not the first attack on villages in the area. On the morning of May 31, a motor shell exploded on a house in Hlaelam Ku Village, Kyaik Hto Township, injuring 6 family members, including a 6-year-old child.
Military Junta friendly media outlets reported that the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the Joint People’s Defense Forces were responsible for firing the motor shells.
However, local residents dispute this claim and state, the junta’s artillery unit based in Theinzayat has been responsible for frequently firing heavy weapons targeting the village.
