48 political prisoners released from Myeik, Dawei prison

According to sources familiar with the prison system, 34 inmates who were sentenced under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code have been released from Myeik and Dawei prisons in Tanintharyi Region.

Those who were released included 22 males and 12 female prisoners from Dawei Prison, 8 male prisoners and 6 female prisoners from Myeik Prison.

“It is known that 36 prisoners will be released from Dawei prison, but 2 prisoners were not released due to other charges. 34 in total were released,” said a person close to the prison system.

In related news, there are reports that some prisoners escaped from the Kawthaung prison but the exact number is unknown.

The military council announced on the morning of May 3 that 2,153 prisoners who were sentenced under Section 505-A of the Penal Code were pardoned under Section 401, Subsection (1) of the Criminal Code.

The military council has released some prisoners on the condition that if they commit the same crime again, they will be apprehended and serve the remaining time from their original sentences plus additional time for all new crimes.
