Mon State’s Winter Crops Get Good Prices in the export market

-

Mon state’s winter crops such as black matpe bean, mung bean, white beans, soybeans and corn are all fetching good prices, according to farmers.

According to a bean farmer from Leikhone Village in Bilin Township, the current price of mung beans is 75,000 kyats per basket, and 20 pounds of peanuts is around 130,000 kyats per basket.

“We have been picking crops since last month. More than 20 baskets of beans are produced per acre. This year is better than the previous year because the yield has increased and the price is good,” he said.

Beans and peanuts, which are winter crops, were planted in Bilin, Thaton, Kyaikhto and Paung Townships.  In Mon State, winter crops are also grown in Mawlamyine, Chaungzon, Kyaikmarraw, Mudon and other townships.

Farmers are also planting millet this year and that too is getting a good price in the market. If the yield is good, it will be a cost effective season for farmers.

“The good price of beans is because of the export market. Black matpe bean is only exported to the Indian market. Mung beans are exported to the Chinese market. If we are allowed to export abroad, we will get a good price,” he added.
