-

The Mon Unity Party (MUP) has submitted its political registration documents for the election to be held by the Military Council.

According to Section 25 of the Law on Registration of Political Parties, the  Rakhine State National Force Party and People’s Pioneer Party (PPP), including the Unity Party, who have plans to continue as a political party, have submitted their political registration in accordance with the law and regulations, according to the Military Council’s Myanmar ALin newspaper published on March 16.

According to the Union Election Commission, there are 26 political parties that have applied for registration within a month of the Military Council enacting the new law governing  registration of political parties.

Among the 26 registered political parties, there are 6 parties that will organize in the entire Union and 20 parties that will organize only within a region and state.  The Union Election Commission continues to verify the right to establish and register parties.

The Mon Unity Party was reorganized in 2019 by the merger of the former Mon National Party (MNP), the Mon Regional Democratic Party (MRDP).  The MUP seeks to be a  representative party that includes Mon people-based civil society organizations.

The Mon Unity Party won 12 representative seats for various parliaments in the last 2020 election, before the military coup.

After the coup, the Mon Unity Party has 1 member serve as a Military Council Advisor and 1 member serves on the Mon State Planning and Administration Council.
