Locals Killed and 8 Injured from  Military Council’s Heavy Weapons

On January 10th, the Karen National Union (KNU) from  Thathong district announced that 1 civilian was killed and 8 others were injured as a result of  heavy weapons firing by battalions under the Myanmar military council stationed in Kyaik Hto Township, Mon State.

On January 6, at 7:30 p.m. a battalion from the 44th Division fired two 60mm guns at the village of Win Kalaw.

The military council’s artillery shell exploded near the homes of U Kyaw Myint,  and Ma Mi Phyu’s.  63-year-old U Kyaw Myint was wounded in the left arm, and Ma Mi Phyu’s 16-year-old daughter, Ma Phyu Yutha, was  wounded  by a bullet that hit her left thigh.

On January 7th, 8 120/60mm guns were also fired at the village by the 44th Division’s Theimzarap-based Battalion at 7:35 p.m., according to the KNU.

A large weapon shell exploded near Thayet Chan, Tone Kwo Village, in Kyaik Hto Township, killing 26-year-old Zaw Moe Lwin, and 6 others.  A 7-year-old child was also injured.

The KNU has said that the military council troops are firing heavy weapons at villages with the intention of causing harm.

The coup forces have often fired heavy weapons into Zee Pyaung, Win Kan, Pyin Ka Toe Khome, Kyauk Pha and Win Kalaw villages in Kyaik Hto township.

Approximately 3,000 local residents from Kyaik Hto have fled to safety due to the use of  heavy weapons.
