“After the coup, the price of gasoline went up and the price of gold went up. The rising prices for gasoline affected everything. Also the cost for electricity is also increasing. Our business has to make do with a generator. As oil prices rise, nothing is working out. The cost is getting higher and higher,” said a baker in Mawlamyine Township.

A three-wheeler taxi driver from Mawlamyine Township said, “even if we pay 3,000 kyats for fuel, we do not get much. In the past, the highest price paid was just a little over 1,000 kyats. Now it is roughly 1,600. It is not convenient. It rises more than it falls.” He added that it was difficult for the taxi industry, because passenger freight rates don’t increase to account for rising fuel costs.
