Former members of the Mon Unity Party form a new Mon Affairs Group

-

A group of people who resigned from the Mon Unity Party (MUP) met at the Mon Temple in Mawlamyine on May 23 and formed a new Mon Affairs Group with 19 members.

“We will register the Mon Affairs Group with the 19 initial founders. There are five purposes for the group. In the first week of June, we will reconvene and the draft purpose document will be discussed. We will review and confirm it,” Leading activist Nai Mon Raza told the Mon News Agency.

The Mon Affairs Group will be formed as an association based in Mon State and will bring together Mon nationals from various areas in townships and villages. It will have activities at the community level.

The main purpose of the group is to improve the sectors related to the whole Mon nation and to unite the scattered Mon forces.

In addition, a center will be set up for Mon literature, culture and arts. That part of the organization will be  responsible for teaching Mon literature, culture, as well as conducting health research and philanthropic activities.

The current Mon affairs group is led by the leaders of the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF), which contested the 1990 election.

After a military coup, two-thirds of the Central Committee agreed to join with the State Administration Council (SAC).  This was a controversial decision leading to 60 party members, including 30 members of the Central committee, to resign.

The disbanded Mon National Democratic Party (MNDF) was officially merged with the Mon Democracy Party (MDP) in 2012 and merged with the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) to form the Mon Unity Party (MUP) in 2018.
