Mawlamyine Township Night Curfew pushed back to 10 pm from 8pm

-

Mawlamyine’ s Township General Administration Department (GAD) has amended section 144 which applies a curfew on residents.  Previously curfew was in place from  8pm to 4am.

Effective May 12, the curfew has been pushed back by two hours. Curfew rules  now apply between the hours of 10pm to 4am.

Five or more people are not allowed on highways, public roads or lanes. People may not gather in parks or public places. Township General Administration Department change now restricts people from going outside from 10 pm to 4am.

Despite this modest relaxation to the curfew hours, members of the military council have been blocking and checking the movement of people beginning at 6 pm.

A statement issued by the GAD that accompanied notice to the change of curfew hours,  claimed that marches or protests can undermine the rule of law and the peace of the community. Such activities have been prohibited.

Eight people have been  killed and more than 300 have been arrested during the curfew period in Mon State.
