“It is believed to be a hand grenade. The explosions were not very loud. The township administration office is close to the USDP office, most people did not know about this explosion because it was not loud. But when a pistol was fired three or four times, people were shocked.” said a New Mon State Party liaison officer.

No one was injured in the blast, according to an official at the Three Pagodas Township Administration Office.

“There are a lot of rumors that a man was shot and killed at the checkpoint. We have not been able to go yet, but we know from reports that no one was injured,” said an official from the Administration Office.

Some shops in the city were closed due to the blasts, but by later in the day, traffic was back to normal, according to staff at the city remittance counter.

At around 10 pm on April 24, two unidentified men on a motorcycle detonated a grenade and fired a shotgun at a military base in Three Pagodas Township.

Despite the violence, peaceful protests against the military continue on a daily basis.
