“The event includes three main objectives: first, to welcome the 73rd Mon National Day in Yangon, second, to help promote the ceasefire and peace process in our country and lastly to have the Mon Ethnic Affairs Minister in Yangon, acknowledge the origin of the Mon people,” reported Min Khine Lin Tun, a Joint Secretary (1) of the Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon).

Mon university students, artists and other ethnic participants took part in the 4 mile marathon. The activity began at 4 am, with runners departing from the Mon Monastery at the southern platform of the Shwedagon Pagoda, and finishing at Alanpya Pogoda Road.

Mon Aung Tun Naing, who won the first prize in the marathon race said, “I am so happy to be the first one reaching the finish line. I want the Mon Literature and Culture Committee to include more fun sport events like a marathon race in the coming years.”

The next Mini-Marathon race for the 73rd Mon National Day (Central) will be held in Mawlamyine on February 2nd. Those interested in joining can register through http://minimarathon.meaorg.com.
