For the 2020 national election, over 48 million Kyats has been budgeted for the task of collecting a voters list for Mon State, according to U Hein Lin Htet, Secretary of State Election Sub-Commission.
“About 48 million Kyats will be spent for the arrangement of training for the Ward/Village Commission, and meal allowances for 3900 staffs from the Ward/Village Commission during the training period and for expenses throughout (the) voting list collections campaign,” said U Hein Lin Htet.
Although the process for collecting the voter list is expected to be completed by September, there have been difficulties in the flood-hit areas. Despite these challenges, U Hein Lin Htet indicated this work will continue.
The compiled voter lists will be submitted to the Township General Administration Department, and then to the Immigration Ministry, according to U Min Naing, Chairperson of Chaungzone Township Election Sub-commission.
“It is the NRC (National Registration) cards that we have to submit to the Ministry of Immigration.” U Min Naing added, this process includes measures to remove some residents from the voter list. He stated, “The choice will be made to remove like those who have the NRC cards or who do not. Those (that) should be removed include monks, deceased persons, and people with mental illness.”
Due to the security reasons, preventing the registration of voters in five villages in the Baw-Naw-Khee village tract in Belin Township, those eligible residents will not be allowed to vote in the 2020 election.
Currently there are 370,000 persons on the voter list, and there will be 940 polling stations in Mon State, according to the Township Election Sub-Commission Office.
In the 2015 general election, there were over 1,510,000 registered voters and there were 919 polling stations in Mon State.
