The Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye said on August 3 that rehabilitation will be faster in the flood-affected areas compared to previous years.
“We will join hands and immediately carry out rehabilitation with the Natural Disaster Management Committee and other ways on obtaining the budget. It will be faster and more beneficial this year compared to last year,” he said.
The Union Minister told this to the media after he arrived in the flood-hit Thaton Township, Mon State and provided necessary aids and donations to flood victims in Zay-ma-thwei (Upper) Village.
The public has suffered losses due to lateness in carrying out rehabilitation works in last year’s flood-hit areas so rehabilitation will be monitored closely. There is still enough time to replant monsoon paddies in the farmlands that have been submerged and the country will not suffer losses if the farmers do not suffer losses, he continued.
“Now, the water has receded by one and a half feet, two and a half feet, and three feet. The situation has improved because one can now travel with cars and motorcycles to some villages, which could only be reached by boat [after the flood]. The first task we have to carry out after the water has dropped is for the people living at the relief camps to return home. The first task is to close down the camps,” said Daw Khine Khine Lei, State Hluttaw MP from Thaton Constituency – 1.
She said clean drinking water will be provided and fly-proof latrines will be built to prevent diarrhea.
“We need to pump out the water with water pumps to repair the damaged wells and ponds. Toilets need to be rebuilt. The state government has promised to provide for necessary needs,” she continued.
After the week-long flooding subsided in Bilin Township, over 15,000 people from around 30 villages have recently been affected by flooding in Thaton Township.
