Extreme temperatures require precautions to protect health

Throughout March and April, daytime temperatures have risen significantly, reaching record levels. This intense heat increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. Special attention must be given to children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

To prevent heat-related illnesses during periods of extreme heat, it is advised to drink water frequently. Increased fluid intake is essential when outdoors. Even when sweating, it is important to replenish electrolytes to prevent dehydration. When venturing outside, people should wear heat-appropriate clothing, such as loose, breathable cotton shirts and light-colored garments that minimize heat absorption. It is recommended to stay in shaded areas as much as possible and avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures peak. If going outside is unavoidable, protective items such as umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses should be used.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, intense physical labor, vigorous exercise, or staying in poorly ventilated, hot spaces can all trigger heat-related illnesses. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and dangerously high body temperatures require immediate medical attention at nearby hospitals or clinics.

Myanmar’s citizens are not only experiencing the adverse effects of rising temperatures but also the compounded hardships caused by fuel shortages and mismanagement under the military junta. Standing for hours in unprotected queues during the scorching month of Tagu goes beyond ordinary fatigue; it puts people at serious risk of life-threatening conditions like heatstroke.

Long lines of motorcycles and cars outside fuel stations not only reflect economic decline but also threaten public safety and health. Elderly individuals, low-income groups, and taxi drivers are particularly vulnerable, often suffering from dizziness, a lack of alertness, and heat-related exhaustion while waiting in the extreme heat. These are distressing situations that raise serious concern.

The Independent Mon News Agency emphasizes the urgent need for the public, especially under the military administration, to recognize the dangers of extreme heat and take proactive measures. By doing so, communities can safely navigate this seasonal threat through collective awareness and preventive action.
