MUP to Begin Election Campaigns After Candidate List Announcement

-

The Mon Unity Party (MUP) says it will begin its election campaign activities only after the official list of candidates is announced by the junta’s Election Commission, according to party leader Nai San Tin.

The junta-controlled Election Commission announced on October 15 that political parties and candidates participating in the upcoming election will be allowed a 60-day campaign period.

“The candidate lists will reportedly be announced on October 17. Only after that will we proceed with our township-level campaign activities to prepare for the election,” said Nai San Tin.

According to the commission, campaigning will be permitted from 6 a.m. on October 28 until midnight on December 26, giving candidates 60 days to promote their platforms.

The commission also stated that parliamentary candidates must conduct campaign activities, such as public gatherings and speeches, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The first phase of the 2025 general election is scheduled to be held on December 28 in Mon State’s Kyaikto, Thaton, Mawlamyine, Chaungzon, and Kyaikmaraw townships.

Meanwhile, resistance groups have declared that they will not recognize the junta-organized election, calling it a “sham election” and vowing to prevent it from taking place.
