Drug trade and usage have become rampant in Ye Township, located in southern Mon State, due to a lack of enforcement, according to local anti-drug activists.
Currently, methamphetamine pills (WY) are being openly sold by motorcycle dealers, and opium poppies are being cultivated and traded within private properties in Ye Township, said a local anti-drug campaigner.
“The prevalence has increased about fivefold, and the trade is happening openly. The main issue is the lack of legal enforcement, leading to an increase in the number of people involved in the drug trade. People are turning to easy ways to make money due to the failing economy, which in turn increases the number of users,” said the activist.
Due to the ease of purchase and low prices that drugs are being used by people from all walks of life, the source continued.
Additionally, some drug dealers are reportedly being used by the military junta as informants on political matters.
“The military junta is employing these individuals because they interact with various groups, allowing them to gather information without fear,” he added.
The use of WY pills is particularly high among young people, with around 20 youths and young adults from Ye Township being sent to various drug rehabilitation centers this year.
Drugs are being used not only in villages and roadside areas but even in schools, according to reports.
Observers warn that if the rising problem of drug trade and usage is not controlled soon, it could lead to more severe consequences.
The Mon Drug Policy Drafting Committee is currently developing a comprehensive drug policy, recognizing that a policy framework is essential to effectively address the drug issue affecting the entire Mon community.
